David L. Katz, MD, MPH, FACPM is Associate Clinical Professor of Epidemiology & Public Health, and Medicine, and Director of Medical Studies in Public Health at the Yale University School of Medicine. A board-certified specialist in both Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine/Public Health, Katz has 15-years of clinical practice experience. He earned his BA from Dartmouth College, his MD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and his MPH from the Yale University School of Medicine. He was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Preventive Medicine in 2001, and voted onto the Boards of the American College of Preventive Medicine, and the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine, in 2002; he chairs committees for both organizations. He is currently a nominee to the United States Preventive Services Task Force, and a member of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) behavioral sciences writing group. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, and serves as a peer-reviewer for several other leading medical journals. Katz has served as a reviewer on study sections convened by both the CDC and NIH.

Dr. Katz founded and is director of the CDC-funded Yale Prevention Research Center, where he serves as principal investigator for numerous studies related to cardiovascular risk modification, obesity prevention and control, nutrition effects on health, behavior change, and chronic disease prevention. He is also the founder and director of the Integrative Medicine Center in Derby, CT, a clinical facility in which conventional and naturopathic medicine are blended to offer patients the best of both, generally with a strong emphasis on nutrition and nutrient therapies.

The recipient of several teaching awards, Katz directs courses at the Yale Schools of Medicine, Public Health, & Nursing, including courses in nutrition, preventive medicine, and public health. He lectures on nutrition and disease prevention throughout the United States and abroad to professional groups, including at national meetings of leading Medical Colleges, and of the American Dietetic Association. He is a frequent speaker at meetings of non-professional groups as well. He will serve as the leader of a Preventive Medicine delegation to the People’s Republic of China in April, 2003, at the request of the People to People’s Ambassador Program.

Katz’ work, and expert opinion, have been cited in O (the Oprah Magazine), Prevention Magazine, Modern Maturity, Remedy Magazine, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Child Magazine, and elsewhere, and he has made numerous radio and TV appearances. Katz authors a weekly newspaper column on Preventive Medicine in the New Haven Register, one of the leading newspapers in Connecticut. He serves as consulting nutrition expert and columnist to the Oprah Magazine.

Dr. Katz has authored numerous scientific papers and chapters, and has authored or co-authored six books, including Epidemiology, Biostatistics & Preventive Medicine (W.B. Saunders, 2001); Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-based Medicine (Sage Publications, Inc., 2001) and Nutrition in Clinical Practice (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2000). The Way to Eat (Sourcebooks, Inc.; December, 2002), detailing the skills and strategies needed to navigate successfully through the modern nutritional environment, is currently in press.

Dr. Katz lives in Connecticut, with his wife Catherine, and their five children: Rebecca, Corinda, Valerie, Natalia, and Gabriel.
